Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has paid tribute to fallen journalists during his media engagement in Accra on Sunday, August 25, 2024.
In a solemn moment before the start of the session, Dr. Bawumia called for a minute’s silence to honor media professionals who lost their lives, particularly those who passed away in the line of duty.
“Your job is very important to sustaining our democracy, but it is also a very difficult job,” Dr. Bawumia remarked.
He added, “Sometimes, in the process of doing your work, you even lose your life.”
Dr. Bawumia emphasized the crucial role of the press in Ghana's democracy and reaffirmed his commitment to ensure press freedom under his administration.
He acknowledged the risks journalists face and reiterated the need to protect them while ensuring they can carry out their duties without fear or intimidation.
Expressing gratitude to the media for attending the event on short notice, Dr. Bawumia noted the full participation from all 16 regions of the country.
He also stressed the importance of the media’s role in holding leaders accountable saying, “any government must be ready to work hand-in-hand with journalists to promote transparency.
“The media plays an important role in our democratic process, and those seeking to lead must be prepared to partner with the media to ensure accountability.”
