A benevolent dictatorship vs. a useless democracy which is better for Ghana?

Ghana is at a crossroad where nothing seems to be working for the ordinary citizens. The issue of high unemployment, higher inflation, scarcity of food stuffs, break down of law and order and the list goes on and on. It appears nothing is working for the ordinary citizens except for the politicians and their cronies in higher places. The youth can’t afford to get married, there is rampant armed robbery by thugs and all decent women are being turned into prostitutes for survival. Such is the level of corruption and hopelessness in the system. However, this notwithstanding, politicians keep on borrowing and piling debt upon debt without much tangible results except for the transportation sector where there seems to be notable improvements in all three areas, namely road, rail and air.

For seven years, the government implemented one village one dam policy, planting for food and jobs that saw more branded pickups roaming the streets than the purchase of any agricultural machinery and implements which rendered the policy more of a slogan than a practical solution to food production challenges.

At least, I am privileged to be old enough to have witnessed the operation feed yourself program under general Kutu Acheampong’s government which resulted in surplus grain production that led to Ghana exporting grain for the first time.

I also lived under Jerry John’s initial AFRC regime where the collective welfare of the people was the order of the day and there was law and order in every facet of the country as compared to today where democracy has led to breakdown of law and order, there is impunity everywhere and nobody seems to care. Galamsey is destroying all our rivers and farmlands and the politically connected people are the main culprits and do so with impunity, all government lands in Accra and other regions are being shared by politicians as if those previous leaders who acquired them for the nation were dumb in the first place.

Politicians including CEOs of governmental organizations are stealing resources to buy houses in Europe, America and Canada. They send their children to school abroad whilst the local government schools are under funded. Such is the hopelessness Ghanaian youth face under the so-called democratic dispensation.

Just across our northern border, a military dictator has brought sense of hope to his people, he has refused to increase his pay and has at the same time asked heads of civil service organizations to take a pay cut in the interest of the people, tractors have been imported to improve agricultural production instead of buying expensive v8 SUVs for himself and his government. Military equipments have been acquired to wage war on the terrorists that have bedeviled the countryside for years. But in democratic Ghana, we cannot even procure 4 helicopter gunships to fight highway robbery which is destroying lives and property. What a sharp difference between the two governments.

Now which of the two governments do you want to live under, a useless democracy or a benevolent dictatorship? Your choice is as good as mine. May God help us all.
