The Council of Elders of the Convention People's Party (CPP) has condemned recent attempts by some members to force the party's Chairperson and Leader out of office, calling such moves "unconstitutional".
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, December 19, the Council of Elders expressed alarm at the instability in the CPP in recent weeks.
It noted reports that some members of the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) had purportedly set up an "Interim Council" after NEC business had concluded.
"The attempt to force the current Chairperson and Leader out of office is also unconstitutional," the statement signed by Council Chairman Senior Comrade Felix Amoah said in part.
The Elders' body further took issue with a fresh legal action launched by former CPP Secretary Comrade Subiri Isah to compel the Chairperson to resign.
It urged Subiri Isah to "immediately withdraw this unnecessary latest suit from court."
The Council of Elders expressed hope that the Chairperson would convene a Central Committee meeting "to take quick remedial action" to stem further deterioration.
Senior Comrade Amoah called on all factions within the party to remain calm "for the singular sake of our dear party."
The statement emphasized that "all issues arising" around the leadership issue should be resolved according to the party's constitution.
The CPP has faced internal turmoil following a vote of no-confidence that removed several key party leaders from their positions.
Nana Yaa Jantuah, who served as General Secretary and Nana Akosua Frimpongmaa Sarpong Kumankumah, who was Chairperson, were among those allegedly dismissed after an internal vote accused them of violating the party's constitution.
This shakeup has sparked strife within the ranks of the CPP.
