Leading British human rights defender and freelance journalist, William Nicholas Gomes, has implored Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Foreign Secretary James Cleverly to intervene over the alleged persecution of renowned human rights activists in Bangladesh. Adilur Rahman Khan and ASM Nasiruddin Elan have faced alleged harassment, intimidation, and imprisonment linked to their involvement with the respected human rights group, Odhikar.
In a recent communication to Downing Street, Mr. Gomes highlighted the longstanding commitment of Mr. Khan and Mr. Elan to documenting and addressing human rights violations in Bangladesh. He pointed to the duo's tireless efforts, especially their influential 2013 report that brought to light extrajudicial killings during a protest. Since its publication, both activists have reportedly experienced increased judicial harassment, arbitrary detention, and public defamation.
According to Mr. Gomes, the Bangladesh Government's crackdown on human rights organisations, especially in light of US sanctions against the country's Rapid Action Battalion, poses a significant concern. The governmental stance seems to have affected Odhikar directly, with alleged financial blockades and persistent denials for registration renewal that hamper the organization's operations.
The situation grows more concerning, Gomes suggests, with the government reportedly questioning the credibility of international reports which are based on Odhikar's findings. Such actions appear to undermine the basic tenets of a democratic society, drawing a bleak picture for human rights advocacy in Bangladesh.
Given the UK's historical commitment to upholding human rights and safeguarding defenders across the globe, Mr. Gomes’s letter urges UK leaders to engage in diplomatic dialogue with Bangladesh. He emphasizes the importance of seeking the immediate release of Mr. Khan and Mr. Elan, arguing their detention stems from their noble human rights endeavours.
The international community now waits, anticipating whether UK officials will heed this call to action and champion the rights and safety of human rights defenders in Bangladesh.
