Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has recounted a frightening road accident involving highlife musician Amakye Dede during a journey from Kumasi to the veteran musician’s residence in Agogo.
In a video shared on social media, Sarkodie described how the vehicle carrying the musicians collided head-on with another vehicle before veering off the road into a nearby bush.
Amakye Dede was seated in the front passenger seat, while Sarkodie travelled in the back alongside the driver and his cameraman.
The musicians were travelling in a convoy, but the other vehicles were some distance behind when the crash occurred. As a result, the four occupants had to deal with the immediate aftermath before the rest of their party arrived.
The incident drew the attention of bystanders, who gathered around the damaged vehicle.
However, Sarkodie said one encounter with a bystander stood out to him. A woman who had alighted from a bus approached him and requested a selfie without asking about his condition.
“People saw the accident, but they didn’t know it was us. One girl came down from the bus and said to me, ‘Where else will I meet you again? Let me take a selfie with you.’ She didn’t ask how I was doing,” he recalled.
The rapper said the encounter illustrated how some people can become so focused on a celebrity's public identity that they overlook the individual's immediate circumstances.
“That’s why I am saying they don’t see a human; they see Sarkodie,” he added.
His account has drawn attention to the personal side of celebrity life, particularly the challenges public figures may face when dealing with unexpected or distressing situations in public.
