“My South African family were calling me to check if i was okay” – Adina speaks on xenophobic attack backlash

Ghanaian singer Adina has opened up about the emotional toll the recent xenophobic tensions in South Africa had on her, revealing that she found herself at the centre of online criticism despite having no connection to the incidents.

Speaking about the situation, the award-winning singer disclosed that her South African relatives became worried for her safety as reports of attacks against foreign nationals spread across social media.

"My South African family were calling me, asking if I was okay, and Ghanaians were in my DM attacking me, and it was causing panic," she said.

According to Adina, the reactions from both sides created unnecessary anxiety for her and those close to her. She explained that while her South African family feared she could be caught up in the unrest, some Ghanaians directed their frustration over the attacks at her because of her ties to South Africa.

Her comments come amid renewed concerns over xenophobic violence in South Africa, where foreign nationals from several African countries, including Ghana, have reportedly been targeted during anti-immigration protests. In recent months, there have been reports of killings, assaults, looting of businesses and the displacement of migrants, prompting diplomatic engagements between Ghana and South Africa.

The situation has also sparked international attention. On Thursday, two Ghanaian nationals petitioned the International Criminal Court (ICC) to examine years of alleged xenophobic violence against African migrants in South Africa, arguing that the recurring attacks deserve international scrutiny. The ICC has confirmed receiving the communication, although it has not decided whether to open a formal investigation.

South African authorities have repeatedly condemned attacks on foreign nationals and pledged to enforce the law against perpetrators, while also urging the public not to spread misinformation or inflammatory content online.
