Xenophobic tensions: South Africa should repay support received from Africans during apartheid — Mugeez

Ghanaian rapper, singer and songwriter Rashid Abdul Mugeez, professionally known as Mugeez, has criticised South Africa amid recent reports of xenophobic tensions in the country.

His remarks follow renewed anti-immigration protests and threats issued by some groups directing African migrants to leave the country by June 30 or face action.

The situation has triggered concern across the continent, with reports of attacks on foreign-owned businesses and evacuation plans by some African countries, including Ghana.

In a social media post on Wednesday, June 17, the R2Bees fame musician argued that South Africa should repay the support it received from other African countries during the struggle against apartheid.

"Maybe we start by making South Africa pay for the support and money the African States gave it during it fight for freedom and help in their Apartheid," he wrote.

Mugeez expressed disappointment over what he described as increasing hostility towards fellow Africans living and working in South Africa.

The entertainer stated that the continent's shared history should promote unity rather than division.

He stressed that African countries played significant roles in supporting South Africa's liberation struggle and should not now be treated as unwelcome outsiders.

"Africa need unity to fight the external force not kill and slaughter one another in the pretext 'You are taking our Jobs'," he stated.

The musician further noted that the current developments run contrary to the vision of solidarity that many African leaders and citizens fought to achieve.

He added, "This was not the Africa we all stand for and fight for."
