Ghanaian musician Kuami Eugene has revealed that his breakout hit Angela was originally created as a birthday gift rather than a commercial single.

The song, released in September 2017 under Lynx Entertainment, became his major industry breakthrough and later featured on his 2018 Rockstar album.

Produced by Killbeatz, the track helped establish Kuami Eugene as one of Ghana’s leading contemporary highlife artistes.

Speaking on the Talk to Kula podcast on YouTube, the artiste explained that the song was inspired by Richie Mensah’s elder sister, Angela, and was initially meant as a personal gesture during her birthday celebrations.

He clarified that there was no romantic connection behind the song, contrary to public speculation over the years.

According to him, the project started informally and later evolved into a professionally produced hit after input from members of the Lynx Entertainment team.

“It was a birthday gift. They were all giving her something, and I didn’t have anything, so I made music with her name,” he said.

Kuami Eugene added that the song gained momentum after the label decided to refine and elevate its production for wider release.

He noted that Angela ultimately became the record that propelled his career and opened major industry doors, including national recognition and award success.
