Alabaster Box chases Medikal with GH¢15million writ

Gospel accapella group, Alabaster Box, has revealed that its first attempt to serve Ghanaian rapper, Medikal, with a GH₵15 million writ in a copyright infringement suit was unsuccessful.

The group filed the lawsuit in April 2025, accusing the rapper of using portions of their song Akwaaba without authorisation in his track Welcome to Africa. Months later, they say the case is still before the courts.

Speaking on Okay FM on February 10, 2026, the group said efforts to personally serve Medikal with court documents did not succeed.

“We tried several times to reach him directly but couldn't,” the group stated.

According to them, the court later granted permission for substituted service, allowing the documents to be delivered through alternative means, including digital platforms.

“The court gave us permission to use another method to serve him. That has been done, and now we are allowing the law to take its course,” they added.

Alabaster Box also disclosed that they initially tried to resolve the matter privately after noticing similarities between the two songs. However, they claimed communication broke down when their lawyer stepped in.

“They stopped engaging with us the moment they realised our representative was a lawyer,” the group alleged.

Despite the situation, the musicians insist they are not seeking a fight but justice.

“We just want the right thing to be done. When the court rules, we will respect it,” they said.

In the suit, the group argues that parts of Welcome to Africa, including sections of the melody and lyrics, closely mirror the opening of Akwaaba. Their legal team is demanding that the song be removed from all platforms and is seeking GH₵10 million in general damages and GH₵5 million in exemplary damages for alleged unauthorised use and reputational harm.
