Wutah Calls for New AI-Generated Music Category in Awards

Ghanaian highlife artiste Wutah Afriyie, formerly of the music duo Wutah, is urging organisers of music award schemes to introduce a dedicated category for Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated songs.

The musician made the call in a Facebook post amid growing debate over the role of AI in modern music creation.

“Going forward, I think music awards organisers should have a category for ‘AI’-generated songs. The synthɛ plenty for the system,” he wrote.

His comment has since ignited widespread discussion among industry stakeholders and music enthusiasts, with opinions sharply divided. While some argue that AI-generated music threatens creativity and authentic human expression, others believe it represents the next frontier of music production and deserves formal recognition.

Globally, conversations around AI in the creative arts continue to intensify. Recently, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, organisers of the Oscars, announced that films created with AI assistance will remain eligible for awards—provided human creative control is clearly established. The directive, however, stressed that AI tools must not replace human authorship.

Afriyie’s proposal has revived discussions about how Ghana’s music award schemes might evolve in response to emerging technologies, and whether new guidelines will be needed to distinguish human creativity from machine-generated output.
