He makes dead bones rattle to the heavy beat emanating from his speakers, the living hail him as the master on the turn-tables, and the ladies simply cannot ignore the hunk who has a way with music; from hi-life to hip-life, the temptations to jazz, heavy metal to hip-hop… no song escapes unpunished from the turn-tables of DJ Advisor.
For the lot who think that Disc-jockeying is blue collar, and pays less, well think again. DJ Advisor, aka Isaac DeGraft Acquah says Disc-jockeying is actually rocket science, and it pays just as well too. There have been many concerns as to how a profession such as DJ’aying can help pay the bills, and renowned Ghanaian DJ’s such as Black share the view that it pays less in GH.
However, Ghana’s finest; DJ Advisor, as he likes to call himself is actually making big dough out of his profession, and debunks the notion that DJ’aying does not fetch much. DJ Advisor is a Fante hunk well in his late twenties who started disc-jockeying 4 years ago, playing in pubs and at parties. The name Advisor was conferred on him by friends’ way back in Cantonments, where he used to reside.
His advice was always sought whenever his pals had problems; hence he carved a niche for himself as a counselor and advisor, and has maintained the name till date. His agility at mixing sounds emanating from turn- tables earned him a contract as the head DJ for renowned X-205, and Vanity Night Club at Osu as well. And at that period he decided that this was what he wanted to do.
Perhaps that explains why he is a marketing guru, yet recently pursued a course at RABODEF to enhance his radio flexibility. As a child, he looked up to Fiifi Pratt, then the host of hi-life Paradise on Choice FM, and promised to be like him. A few years down the line, Advisor is a DJ at Choice Fm, hosting the same week-day program “Hi-Life Paradise”, from 1pm to 4pm.
DJ Advisor cautions that DJ’aying is not about slotting in a disc or two, and then Bob’s your Uncle. His exception at knowing what genre of music to play, fading out a track, mixing and scratching puts him on top of the rest. Though there are many software to help the slobs out, DJ Advisor prefers doing his own thing manually, using the manual player.
DJ Advisor grinned when he was slapped with the sensitive question of Payola in Ghana. Though he condemns the act of demanding money before giving artistes airplay, he has nothing against producers and artistes offering him money willingly after he has played a song to their satisfaction. DJ Advisor says this concerning Michael Dwamena, “The artiste is great.
He composed a good song, and though I have not received any money from him I play his music most of the time on my show. To curb payola, artistes should endeavor to churn out good music, and then the DJs will have no choice but to play their music without demanding money.” DJ Advisor says that artistes and producers who offer Payola are those who churn out bad music. He believes that DJaying could get better in GH if all DJs are brought together under an association.
DJ Advisor is attached to his family, and of course his sweetheart whose name he failed to disclose. That leaves you still peeping through the crack. And trust me; the big bucks are rolling in for this guy as a DJ.
