Ghanaian Highlife singer Kuami Eugene has responded to allegations that he steals lyrics from other artists for his songs.
In an interview, the one-time VGMA Artist of the Year addressed the criticism, noting that, it is not theft but taking inspiration from existing works to create something new.
He noted that this strategy is commonly used by many renowned artists, including Grammy winner Burna Boy of Nigeria.
Eugene lamented that Ghanaians seem to enjoy it when international acts like Burna Boy engage in alleged 'song theft' but criticize him for the same thing.
He stated, "I'm not the only artiste to do this; every big act does this. Burna Boy does it, Joey B does it, Kelvyn Boy does it, but whenever Kuami Eugene does it, it becomes news."
The singer added, "It baffles me because I feel like Twitter is one platform where the people there seem to be very knowledgeable about things that go on in the industry, and sometimes they sound like they know what they're talking about. But then again you look at some other people on that same platform and it seems like they have no idea what they’re talking about.”
He continued that, "Either that or they[the critics] are hypocrites because they still listen to artistes like Burna Boy even though he draws inspiration from other songs and they never complain. But for our own people, the same people complaining are the same people jamming to the song."
Kuami Eugene has faced constant criticisms over accusations of stealing songs such as his hit "Wish Me Well."
He has responded by collaborating with the alleged original creators on remixes to prove his detractors wrong.
