GMET forecasts thunderstorms in Northern Ghana as Southern areas expect cloudy weather

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMET) has predicted thunderstorms and rainfall in parts of northern Ghana and the transition belt on Wednesday, July 22, while most areas in the south are expected to experience cloudy conditions, with mist and fog in the early hours.

In its 18-hour weather forecast valid from 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, GMET said some communities within the northern and transition zones are likely to record rain accompanied by occasional thunder during the morning.

The agency noted that coastal, forest and mountainous areas in southern Ghana may experience mist and fog, which could reduce visibility for motorists and other road users. Some locations may also record light rain or drizzle during the morning period.

According to GMET, weather conditions are expected to improve later in the day, with most parts of the country experiencing a combination of sunshine and cloudiness.

However, the agency warned that thunderstorms and rainfall could return to parts of the northern sector, transition zone and middle belt from late afternoon into the evening.

Temperatures are expected to range between 21°C and 24°C for minimum readings, with maximum temperatures reaching about 33°C in parts of northern Ghana. Coastal areas are expected to record temperatures between 23°C and 29°C, while forest areas could experience temperatures ranging from 23°C to 30°C.

The forecast indicates that Accra and Winneba may experience brief morning rainfall before becoming partly cloudy later in the day. Areas including Takoradi, Axim, Koforidua and Kumasi are expected to begin the day with misty conditions.

In the northern regions, towns such as Tamale, Bolgatanga, Wa, Damongo and Nalerigu are forecast to experience cloudy weather with periods of sunshine, although some areas may receive thunderstorms later in the afternoon or evening.

GMET also reported that sea conditions are expected to remain calm, creating generally favourable conditions for marine activities.

The agency has advised motorists, especially those travelling through areas affected by mist and fog, to exercise caution due to reduced visibility. Residents in areas likely to experience thunderstorms have also been encouraged to stay updated on weather developments and take appropriate safety measures.
