Nigerian Gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has threatened to file a N2 billion lawsuit against musician Obidiz for using her name in a secular song.
The song, titled "Mercy Chinwo," contains "disparaging and derogatory lyrics," according to a letter from Chinwo's lawyers to Obidiz, dated March 25.
Chinwo, who is renowned for promoting the Gospel of Christ and spreading positivity around the world through her music, has built a respectable brand and spiritual reputation for herself.
The unauthorized use of her name and image is a violation of her rights and reputation, according to the letter.
The letter demands that Obidiz immediately cease and desist from any further use of Chinwo's name and image in promotion of his music.
It also calls for the song to be taken down from all digital platforms and for a public apology to be made in writing, expressing retraction and remorse for the harassment and defamation of character.
“Failure upon which the full machinery of the law will be set in motion against you including approaching the Court of Law to award damages against you to the tune of N2,000,000,000.00 (Two Billion Naira) in a favour of our Client," the letter reads.
Chinwo's legal team expects Obidiz to promptly comply with their demands. If he fails to do so, they will approach the Court of Law to seek damages on behalf of their client.
Her fans have taken to social media to show their support, with many expressing their disgust at Obidiz's actions.
It remains to be seen how the case will unfold, but one thing is clear: Chinwo will not back down when it comes to protecting her rights and reputation.
