Mahama orders GH¢2 cut in diesel price to avert transport fare hikes

President John Dramani Mahama has directed a temporary GH¢2.00 reduction in the regulatory margin on diesel as part of measures to cushion consumers and prevent an increase in transport fares.

The intervention, which takes effect on Tuesday, August 4, will remain in force for one month unless reviewed by the government.

The directive comes after the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) threatened to increase transport fares following recent increases in fuel prices, a move that has raised concerns over the cost of living and inflation.

"His Excellency the President has directed that in line with the decision of Cabinet and the successful intervention implemented in April 2026, the regulatory margin on diesel be reduced by GH¢2.00 per litre for one (1) month," the Presidency said in a statement issued on Monday, August 3.

According to the Presidency, the temporary measure is aimed at easing the burden on consumers and also limiting the impact of rising fuel prices on transportation and the wider economy.

"This temporary intervention is intended to cushion consumers, prevent transport fare hikes, contain inflationary pressures, and mitigate the pass-through effect of higher fuel prices on the cost of living," the statement added.

The Presidency said the government would continue to monitor developments in the international energy market and implement additional policy measures where necessary to protect Ghanaians and sustain the country's economic recovery.
