DSTVs widely popular music channel. 'Channel O' has launched its first ever Reel Music Video Awards. The video awards, which are the first of its kind in Africa, will be broadcast on 'Channel O' on Friday, December, 5.

Ghana’s Kojo Antwi has been nominated for Best Reggae Video for his song “Me Nya Ntaban”. 'Channel O' CEO. Ayanda Ishabalala has long been dedicated to the idea that founding a music video awards show would fulfil an inherent need for such an event.

The "Channel O" Reel Music Video Awards are aimed at encouraging the production of top quality music video in Africa, thus ensuring that they are competitive in the international arena — with the standards of creativity, ingenuity, technical success and good deliverance of a song’s message as core focus.

Unlike most awards shows, where a panel of judges chooses the winners, the Reel Music Video Awards winners are decided by 'Channel O' viewers. Viewers will have the opportunity to cast their votes for their favourite artists. The voting lines and the website will be open from this month and close on Monday, December 1.

The continent’s most popular and prominent musicians have been nominated in the show’s 23 categories. Having steeped her music in the tribal and pop rhythms of her West African heritage, the Benin-born. Paris/Brooklyn-based Angelique Kidjo, alongside the “Golden Voice Of Africa”, Salif Keita, and internationally acclaimed Latin jazz vocalist, Cesaria Avora, lead the nominations list with a total of four nominations each.

Famous for soukous, the Kinshasa raised Koffi Olomide gained an impressive three nominations in the “Best African Language Central”, “Best Collaboration Video” and “Best Choreography” categories.

Big Brother Africa housemate, Bruna, earned herself a nomination in the “Best New Comer” category, with the legendary, Enoch Sontonga and Nigerian-born singer-composer and instrumentalist Fela Kuti up for the “Special Recognition Award” category. Kuti’s son, the controversial Grammy nominee Femi Kuti, rapper and former 'Channel O' presenter, Mizchif and celebrated African musical icon Youssou N’dour earned themselves two nominations. Other nominees include Tony Tetuilla, Mandoza, Bongo Maffin, TKZee, Gloria Bosman and Papa Wemaba.
