Mr. Stephen Anokye, Central Regional Manager of the Ghana Road Safety Commission, has suggested that road safety be treated as a subject in the basic schools.

Apam, July 9, GNA - Mr. Stephen Anokye, Central Regional Manager of the Ghana Road Safety Commission, has suggested that road safety be treated as a subject in the basic schools.

This, he said, would help the children when crossing, or walking on the shoulders of the road.

Mr. Anokye made the suggestion at a workshop his out-fit organized for School Health Educational Programme (SHEP) Coordinators in schools in Gomoa West at Apam.

The workshop was aimed to sensitize the coordinators on road safety issues, for them to also impart the acquired knowledge to the children, in order for them to abide by road safety regulations.

Mr. Anokye took the participants through road signs, rules and regulations of road safety and its usage, tips of vehicles one should board, and the purpose of ramps on the road.

He was of the view that when properly schooled on the usage of the road, children would be more cautious while using the road.

He said most accidents on the road could be prevented if enough care was taken by users..

Mr. Theophilus Edu-Mensah, Gomoa West District Chief Executive, commended officials from the Central Regional Directorate of the Road Safety Commission, for organizing such an educative workshop for the SHEP Coordinators in the area.

He said the District Assembly was ready to partner them to organize similar workshops for drivers in all the communities in the district to help reduce carnage on the road.

Mr. Anokye later presented road safety manuals to the participants.
