Table Tennis Star Derek Abrefa seems to have established himself as the King of Ghana Table Tennis in recent times as he goes for his fifth Best Table Tennis Player of the Year Award on Saturday.

Abrefa who works with the Ghana Immigration Service and attends Cape Coast University on started claiming the prestigious award from 2009 and was on stage in 2012, 2013 and 2016. In 2015, he jointly received the SWAG award with other members of the Male Team of Ghana after they performed well at the 2015 All African Games.

This year will thus become the sixth time he would be climbing the stage and he is very excited that the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo Addo is going to be in attendance.

He also praised SWAG for its credibility and fairness in awarding the deserving sportsmen and women, noting that it is not easy monitoring the performance of local and international sports personalities doing over 40 disciplines.

He commended the leadership of SWAG and the organizers who have always made the event a memorable one.

He said “the SWAG Awards night is my most cherished moments as a sportsman and I thank the Table Tennis Federation for exposing me, as well as my coach and President, Mawuko Afadzinu who is an executive board member of the GOC as well as patron of SWAG” he said.

Abrefa who has held the Number One Seed position for the past five years said the SWAG Awards is big and memorable, so in future nominees must be allowed to invite their guests to come and observe.

He prayed that more companies would come on board to support the event.

The 42nd MTN/ SWAG Awards comes off at the State House on Saturday May 27, 2017 and it is strictly by invitation.

However, StarTimes will show the programme live on Max TV, GTV Sports Plus and in over 30 countries around the world.
