A befitting launch for the 29th edition of the Accra Milo Marathon has been rolled out in Accra on Wednesday.
As usual, a grand number of 10,000 competing athletes are expected to take part in the country's biggest mass sport scheduled for September 21.
Code named “Every Champ starts by taking a first step”, this year's game would see the 5km fun run introduced last year maintained with the organizers shelving U-15 competitors.
Director of Nestle Ghana, Mrs. Freda Y. Duplan explaining the shelving pointed out that it is to give more priority to the non-competitive aspect of the fun run to encourage family work out and physical activity lifestyle among the general public.
She said “As a brand, Milo is inviting all mothers, the youth, corporate workers, fitness and health promotion clubs and professional associations to join the race by taking the first step which would go a long way to impact on the life of someone.”
“Every step taken in the fun run will go towards providing shoes to an underprivileged child in the country to help them take their first step towards becoming champions in sports and in life.”
Milo, the headline sponsor of the event has pledged to donate up to 4,000 pairs of shoes for distribution in collaboration with Ghana Education Service.
She therefore urged the public to register and participate in the event as they hope to exercise and also contribute to the growth of the country by assisting needy children with shoes.
Minister of Tourism Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare and her Deputy Dzifa Gomashie who pledged their support for the event and registered for the fun run, graced the launch.
Prizes, both cash and gifts amounting to GH¢ 300,000 will be given out this year, according to the organizers.
The 5km race will commence at Salvation Army near the Summer Hut Junction through Down Ride Pharmacy to St. Mary's and Banana Inn.
Registration begins from August 21 across the usual registration centers including Dansoman, Pee Tay, High Street, Adjin-Tettey's Residence, Civil Service Clinic, Ebony Restaurant, Nestle, Azumah Nelson Complex, El-Wak, Madina, GCB, Ring Road, Osu Presby, West Hills, Accra Mall, Junction Mall, Mallam Junction, Abeka and Media Partners.
