
Anokye Stars produced a spirited performance to beat Liberty Sports 3-0 on penalties in the final of the Coca Cola U-17 national soccer championship after a 0-0 regulation game at the Carl Reindorf Park at Dansoman in Accra on Sunday.
They have thus qualified to participate in the World Coca Cola U-17 championship at a future date. They will as well witness the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa in an all-expenses paid trip by Coca-Cola Limited.
Beside the World Cup treat, Anokye Stars took home a cash prize of GH¢1,000, a silverware, certificate, medals and Coca Cola products.
Liberty on the other hand, received a GH¢600 cash prize, a trophy, medals and Coca Cola products for their efforts in the two-day soccer festival.
Speaking at the well organized juvenile soccer championship, Jordan Anagblah, chairman of the Regional Football Association (RFA) urged all to embrace Coca Cola's concept of unveiling soccer talents at the juvenile as well as the grass roots level.
The Franchise Manager of Coca-Cola Equatorial Africa, Philip Ayivor expressed gross satisfaction with the success of the initiative, which had achieved its two-pronged objective of unearthing juvenile soccer talents and ensuring physical activity.
He praised Coach EK Afranie profusely for embracing the concept and pledged his outfit's continued support for the development of sports in the country.
Liberty's Kwesi Fakah was the discovery of the tournament, while Anokye's Kwadjo Nimako won the Best goalkeeper Award. Anokye's coach Mohammed Sani Polo grabbed the Best Coach Award with the Best Defender prize going to Alfred Arthur Opoku of Liberty Sports.
Jacob Asiedu Appau of Young Medeama finished as the Most Valuable player, with Issifu Lamptey of Schalke FC winning the top scorer award after netting three goals. For their excellence, they received certificates, trophies and Coca Cola products.
Organizers of the competition appreciated the Minister of Youth and Sports, Akua Sena Dansua; her deputy Reuben Nii Nortey Dua, and the Chief Executive of the National Sports Council (NSC), Worlanyo Agra with certificates for their efforts.
The rest were Liberty Professionals, the Premier League Board (PLB), Professionals Football Association of Ghana, Tony Baffoe, Referees Association of Ghana(RAG), coach Afranie and the Dansoman Divisional Police Commander.
Twelve teams from the 10 regions battled for the South African 2010 single slot after close to eight months of regional juvenile soccer tourney.
Ultimate Soccer Academy, Manchester United, Schalke FC Soccer Intellectuals, Young Medeama, West Cedars, Anokye Stars (Kumasi), Corners Babies, Young Kotoko, Catholic Stars and Anokye Stars(Upper West), after emerging champions in the regions, battled for supremacy in last Sunday's national championship.
