Kai Havertz's early strike gave Arsenal a first win at Liverpool in 14 years as The Gunners moved three points clear at the top of the Premier League.
Looking to capitalise on Manchester City's loss on Saturday, Arsenal seized control of the match when Alisson gave the ball away before Declan Rice found Havertz, who tapped home a pinpoint low cross.
The goal woke up Liverpool, who threw wave after wave of attacks at The Gunners but could not test David Raya.
The Reds felt aggrieved not to be given a penalty when Jurrien Timber pulled Alexander Isak's shirt when attempting a header, but VAR opted against overturning the decision.
As half-time approached, Liverpool attacked with more tempo. Florian Wirtz hit the bar from a free-kick, before Alexis Mac Allister headed over from close range, unmarked.
Mikel Arteta's tactical changes at the break paid dividends, as his side were set up perfectly defensively to frustrate Liverpool, who could not muster a shot on target.
In fact, it was Arsenal who came closest when Christos Tzolis, a surprise starter after his injury layoff, saw his curling effort tipped behind the post by Alisson.
The tempestuous atmosphere finally boiled over when Mac Allister clashed with Timber following a slap on Martin Odegaard's head. Noni Madueke intervened and came together with the Argentine, who went down, but Madueke escaped a second yellow.
Liverpool threw on the attackers and put Virgil Van Dijk up top, but could not get a chance from their constant crosses, as Arsenal saw out the game to bag a famous win.
Arsenal overtake Man City to move three points clear, while Liverpool remain fifth, nine points off top spot.
Both sides are in UEFA Champions League action in midweek, as Arsenal visit Slavia Praha, while Liverpool face a trip to Fenerbahce.
