Former Ghana captain Andre Ayew has called for urgent investment in infrastructure, youth development and long-term planning to revive Ghanaian football.
Ayew warned that the country must move beyond repeated discussions about improving the game and begin implementing practical measures to address its challenges.
Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, the former Sunderland and Swansea City forward cited Morocco, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Algeria and South Africa as examples of African nations making progress through deliberate planning and investment.
He believes Ghana must learn from their approaches and develop a clear strategy to restore its position among the continent's leading football nations.
Ayew highlighted the importance of youth development and competitive domestic leagues, pointing to Senegal as an example of a country that has created pathways for young players to gain first-team experience before moving to Europe.
He cited Senegalese academies Jambars and Génération Foot, alongside Ivory Coast's ASEC Mimosas, as examples of structures helping to nurture young talent and prepare players for professional football.
The former Black Stars captain also stressed the need to improve football infrastructure, strengthen planning and ensure that promised projects are delivered.
He argued that Ghana and Nigeria are among the African football nations struggling to achieve the progress expected of them, insisting that meaningful change would require immediate action rather than further delays.
“We have played the game. Some of us are still playing. But we always talk about tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow. The matter is now. What are we doing now?” Ayew said.
His comments underline the need for Ghana to establish a sustainable football development system that supports young players, strengthens domestic competitions and improves the country's football infrastructure.
Ayew also praised the progress of women's football in Cameroon, noting that sustained planning and commitment could deliver positive results.
He believes Ghana must act now to address its challenges and prevent further decline, with investment in grassroots football and long-term development identified as key areas requiring attention.
