The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has referred allegations of sexual misconduct involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School and female students to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for investigation.
The referral is intended to enable the police to investigate the criminal aspects of the allegations while education authorities conduct their own administrative inquiry into the matter.
Speaking to Citi News' Akosua Otchere on Monday, October 19, Mr Iddrisu confirmed that the school's headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, had been interdicted pending the outcome of investigations.
He stressed that the government would not tolerate sexual misconduct in schools, describing any such conduct involving teachers and students as a serious abuse of office.
“Any act of sexual misconduct involving a teacher and a student amounts to abuse of office, and government takes strong exception to it. We have forwarded it to the criminal investigation department to deal with the criminal aspects of it whilst I’ve asked for the suspension of the headmaster without prejudice whilst we look into the merits of the case,” he said.
The minister also disclosed plans to establish a committee to advise the government on measures to address the issue.
He said he supported moves to make the Ghana Education Service's code of conduct and standards legally binding under Article 11 of the 1992 Constitution.
According to Mr Iddrisu, the government is also considering broader measures to tackle indiscipline in schools, including the development of stronger regulations to guide the conduct of both students and teachers.
The Ghana Education Service announced the interdiction of Mr Abdulai in a statement issued on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, to allow investigations into the allegations to proceed.
The allegations reportedly triggered a student protest at the school, during which some school property was destroyed, resulting in the temporary closure of the institution.
