Headlines Mahama should have appointed Edudzi Tameklo to EC to teach hypocrite NPP some sense – A Plus on Afi appointment brouhaha

Gomoa Central MP Kwame A Plus has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over calls for newly appointed Electoral Commission (EC) Deputy Chairperson Emelia Afi Agbenyo to step down, accusing the party of hypocrisy over political appointments to state institutions.

Reacting to Martin Kpebu’s call for a clean sweep of the Electoral Commission, A Plus argued that the NPP should not oppose political appointments under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government after making similar appointments while in power.

He said President John Dramani Mahama should have appointed the CEO of National Petroleum Authority Edudzi Tameklo to the Electoral Commission to make the NPP understand the consequences of politicising state institutions.

“If I were President Mahama, I would have appointed Edudzi Tameklo to the Electoral Commission, so that the next time you get power, you’ll also get sense to use it wisely!” he wrote on social media.

A Plus accused the NPP of benefiting from its appointments to the Electoral Commission and other state institutions while in government, only to challenge the practice when political power changes hands.

“When you were appointing your people to the EC and winning 9–0 at the Supreme Court, you had no idea the NDC was busy grooming an entire academy of up-and-coming strikers who would one day beat you 15–0!” he said.

He argued that political interference had spread across several public institutions, including the Police Service, the Military and the Electoral Commission.

“We must all stop being hypocritical and admit one uncomfortable truth: we have politicized virtually everything in Ghana!” he stated.

According to him, the practice extends beyond major state institutions to local governance and even the management of public toilets, where he claimed changes in government often lead to changes in those responsible for managing such facilities.

A Plus said ending the practice would require political parties to condemn partisan appointments consistently, regardless of which party benefits.

He challenged the NPP to apply the same standards to appointments made by the NDC as it did when making appointments during its own tenure in government.

“So, it’s good when the NPP does it but bad when the NDC does the same thing?” he asked.
