The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation have appointed Kim Lars Björkegren to lead the Black Stars' interim technical team for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Somalia next month.
Björkegren will work alongside Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram as assistant coaches, while Fatawu Dauda has been appointed goalkeepers' coach.
The appointments follow the recommendation of the five-member Black Stars coach search committee, chaired by Fred Pappoe, as Ghana seek to revive their qualifying campaign after a disappointing start.
In a joint statement, the GFA and the Sports Ministry said the interim arrangement was intended to provide continuity, experienced leadership and strategic direction during a period of transition.
“Following an extensive review process and consultations with a number of qualified coaching candidates, the Committee determined that the most effective approach for this important period was the appointment of a complementary technical team,” the statement said.
The two institutions added that the combination of coaches brings together international experience, local knowledge and an understanding of the Ghanaian football landscape.
Additional technical and support staff will be appointed to strengthen the team ahead of the November international window.
The interim arrangement will apply specifically to the two matches against Somalia, while the search committee continues its work to identify a substantive head coach.
Ghana are without a permanent head coach following the departure of Carlos Queiroz after successive defeats in their opening two Group C qualifiers.
The Black Stars lost 2-0 away to Ivory Coast before suffering a 4-2 defeat by The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium, despite taking a two-goal lead.
Those results have left Ghana bottom of Group C without a point, increasing the pressure on the team to secure maximum points in their next fixtures.
The Black Stars are scheduled to host Somalia in a double-header at the Accra Sports Stadium in November, with the matches forming part of the third and fourth rounds of qualifying.
Ghana will be hoping to turn their fortunes around as they seek to return to the continental showpiece after missing the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
The GFA, the Sports Ministry and the search committee have called on Ghanaians to support the team as preparations begin for the crucial encounters.
