Former campaign spokesperson for Kennedy Ohene Agyapong’s 2026 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership bid, Kwasi Kwarteng, has dismissed reports that the former Assin Central Member of Parliament has resigned from the party.
He said Kennedy Agyapong is currently in China on business and has not submitted any resignation letter to the party’s leadership.
Kwarteng made the clarification in a social media post on Friday, October 16.
“Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong is currently in China conducting business. He’s not submitted any letter of resignation from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to anyone. Please disregard any such report,” he wrote.
The denial comes amid renewed speculation about the former's political future following his defeat in the NPP’s presidential primary held on January 31, 2026.
The former Assin Central MP placed second with 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 per cent of the valid votes cast, while former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia won the contest with 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 per cent.
Since the primary, rumours that Kennedy Agyapong had left the NPP have circulated on social media, with some commentators pointing to his perceived absence from party activities as a basis for the claims.
However, the claims are not new. In March 2026, fact-checking outlet GhanaFact investigated similar viral reports alleging that Mr Agyapong had broken away from the NPP after losing the primary and found them to be false.
Following the January primary, Kennedy Agyapong urged his supporters to remain calm and focus on the future of the party, acknowledging the defeat while encouraging them not to view it as the end of their political journey.
