The Ghana government will continue to financially support the Ghana Premier League until clubs are able to become self-sufficient, Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams has said.
Adams confirmed that the government is currently sponsoring the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League as part of efforts to strengthen domestic football.
He said the financial intervention was intended to provide clubs with the support they need to become more sustainable and eventually reduce their dependence on state funding.
“Government is sponsoring it (GPL) and intends to continue to sponsor up to a point that the clubs can be on their feet,” Adams told Max TV.
The Buem MP said the government's broader objective was to develop domestic clubs and leagues rather than provide financial assistance indefinitely.
“Government is interested in building our domestic clubs and leagues,” he added.
The Ghana Premier League has operated without a major commercial title sponsor in recent years, leaving clubs facing significant financial challenges.
The return of President John Dramani Mahama's administration in 2025 has seen increased government involvement in domestic football, with the state committing financial resources to support the top flight.
Ahead of the start of the 2026/27 season, each of the 18 Premier League clubs received GH¢1m in government support.
The funding is aimed at helping clubs meet operational costs while improving their financial stability.
Government support for the league had previously been announced at the launch of the broadcaster for the 2025/26 season, when Ghana Football Association president Kurt Okraku disclosed the state's investment in the competition.
Adams suggested that once clubs become financially stable, government resources could be redirected towards other areas of football development.
The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season began in September, with 18 clubs competing for the league title and places in continental competitions.
