President Mahama dissolves National Sports Authority board with immediate effect

President John Dramani Mahama has dissolved the Governing Board of the National Sports Authority (NSA) with immediate effect.

The decision is part of a broader directive to dissolve the governing boards of several state-owned institutions.

Other institutions affected include Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited, Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST), VALCO, Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited, Ghana Post Company Limited, the Road Maintenance Trust Fund, TDC Ghana Limited and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).

In a letter dated 2 September 2026, the President directed the affected institutions to take the necessary steps, in line with the relevant laws and governing instruments, to formally notify members of the outgoing boards.

Despite the dissolution, the respective management teams will remain in charge of the day-to-day running of the institutions until new boards are constituted.

Management has, however, been instructed not to undertake major policy, financial or contractual decisions that require board approval without prior authorisation from the appropriate authority.

The NSA board, which was constituted for the 2025-2029 period, was chaired by Dr Fred Awaah.

Other members included NSA Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, National Sports College representative Fuseini Bawa, Samuel Duku Sarfo of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, Nana Adwoa Owusu-Amoh of the Ministry of Finance and Is-Haku Al-Hassan of the Ministry of Education.

The board also included representatives from the security services, tertiary institutions, the National Paralympic Committee and the Ghana Olympic Committee, alongside distinguished sporting personalities and other individuals with expertise in sports development.

The dissolution comes at a significant time for Ghana's sporting sector, with renewed attention on the management and condition of the country's major sports facilities.

The Accra Sports Stadium and Baba Yara Sports Stadium have recently come under public scrutiny, with concerns raised about their condition and calls for renovation and improved maintenance.

The development also comes ahead of Ghana's 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. The Black Stars are scheduled to face The Gambia on 27 September as preparations continue for the qualifiers.

The reconstitution of the NSA board is therefore expected to be closely watched as the government seeks to address wider concerns surrounding sports administration and infrastructure in Ghana.
