Medeama coach Ibrahim Tanko open to Black Stars coaching job

Medeama SC head coach Ibrahim Tanko says he would be willing to take charge of the Black Stars if offered the opportunity.

Ghana are currently without a substantive head coach following the reported departure of Carlos Queiroz after disagreements with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation over his demands.

The Black Stars are expected to regroup in September as they begin preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Assistant coach Desmond Ofei has been linked with the vacant position, while Tanko has also emerged as a potential candidate following his impressive work with Medeama.

Tanko, who previously served as an assistant to former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah, says he would consider the role if he is given the necessary support by the football authorities.

“If the Black Stars coaching opportunity comes and the authorities believe I’m the right man for the job, why not?" he told Asempa FM.

The 48-year-old has considerable experience within Ghana's national team setup, having previously served as head coach of the Black Meteors, the country's Under-23 side.

However, his time with the U-23 team ended without qualification for the Olympic Games.

Tanko is currently enjoying success at club level after guiding Medeama to the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League title, securing the club a place in the CAF Champions League.

Should he be appointed, Tanko would become the seventh head coach of the Black Stars under GFA president Kurt Okraku's administration.

Ghana missed out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and will be determined to secure qualification for the 2027 tournament, which will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The GFA is expected to make a decision on the vacant Black Stars coaching position before the team's return to action in September.
