Ghanaian boxers shared boxing kits during Commonwealth Games in Glasgow - Black Bombers coach Ofori Asare reveals

Black Bombers head coach Ofori Asare has revealed that inadequate logistical support affected Ghana’s preparations and performance at the just-ended 2026 Commonwealth Games, claiming some boxers were forced to share competition kits.

According to the experienced trainer, the team did not receive all the promised equipment and resources ahead of the Games, creating unnecessary challenges for the athletes and technical team.

Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, Asare disclosed that some members of the boxing team had to make do with limited resources during the competition.

“When we talk about logistics, some of the things we are supposed to receive we didn’t receive. Three of my boxers shared one set of kits,” Asare said.

The coach also revealed that incorrect ring measurements created additional difficulties for one of his boxers during a bout, forcing him to intervene to prevent a possible disqualification.

"The measurement wasn't correct. Even if you watch some of the videos, where I had to instruct the boxer to fight, the pants were going down, and the referee threatened to disqualify the boxer. I had no option but to go and look for a plastic tape to fix it during the bout," Asare explained.

Asare described the situation as disappointing, insisting that such logistical setbacks should not occur when athletes are representing Ghana at an international competition.

His comments are likely to renew calls for improved investment and better support systems for Ghanaian athletes, especially in sporting disciplines that often receive less attention compared to football.

Ghana participated in the 2026 Commonwealth Games with a 40-member contingent and returned with two medals. Paralympian Zinabu Issah won silver in the women’s F57 shot put event after a season-best throw of 8.6 metres, while boxer Amadu Mohammed secured bronze in the men’s 55kg category.
