Maxwell Konadu promises Black Satellites overhaul after WAFU B U-20 Championship elimination

Black Satellites head coach Maxwell Konadu has revealed that Ghana's U-20 team will undergo significant changes ahead of the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations following the side's disappointing campaign at the WAFU B U-20 Championship in Côte d'Ivoire.

The former Asante Kotoko trainer made the remarks after Ghana crashed out at the group stage of the regional tournament, failing to secure a place in the semi-finals.

The Black Satellites endured a frustrating campaign, collecting just two points from three matches. They opened with a defeat to Nigeria before playing out successive draws against Burkina Faso and Togo.

Needing nothing short of victory in their final Group B fixture to keep their qualification hopes alive, Ghana were held to a goalless draw by Togo at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro on Sunday, bringing their tournament to an early end.

Despite the setback, Konadu remains optimistic about the future of the team, insisting the lessons learned from the competition will prove valuable as Ghana prepares to host the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

"The team came here to compete and to win. Having said that, we also know there were one or two things that didn't go according to plan. In football, you don't always get everything 100 per cent," Konadu said after the game.

He stressed that the disappointing campaign would serve as motivation rather than discourage the technical team and players.

"This is not going to demotivate us. Rather, it will encourage us to give our best. We have to move on, reorganise ourselves and come back stronger."

The experienced coach also confirmed that the squad will not remain unchanged for next year's continental tournament, signalling that new faces will be introduced as preparations intensify.

"We came here to win, but it didn't work out. We will reorganise ourselves. Definitely, we will not present the same team for the AFCON next year," he added.

Ghana will host the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations as part of activities marking the country's 70th Independence Anniversary celebrations, with expectations high that the Black Satellites will mount a stronger challenge on home soil.
