Team Ghana’s hopes of lining up its strongest women’s 4x100m relay team at the 2026 Commonwealth Games have suffered a setback after sprinter Anita Afrifa picked up an injury during her opening race in Glasgow.
The 22-year-old sprint sensation was forced to pull out of Heat 4 of the women’s 200m after experiencing a sharp pain in her right knee midway through the race.
Afrifa, who had been recovering from an earlier injury suffered during Team Ghana’s pre-Games training camp at the Derby Arena, was making her first competitive appearance at the Games when the setback occurred.
The injury has now placed her participation in the women’s 4x100m relay under serious doubt, with the sprinter expected to be a crucial member of Ghana’s relay squad.
Team Ghana’s medical team is closely monitoring her condition and will conduct further assessments before determining whether she will be cleared to compete in the relay event.
Afrifa’s latest setback comes as a major concern for Ghana’s athletics team, which has recorded several promising performances in Glasgow.
The team will be hoping the talented sprinter makes a swift recovery and returns to action in time to help the relay squad’s medal ambitions.
