Government spent GH¢58 Million on Black Stars’ 2026 World Cup campaign - inance Minister reveals

The Government of Ghana spent GH¢58 million to support the Black Stars’ participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has disclosed.

Dr Forson made the revelation while presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, where he outlined government expenditure on various programmes and sectors approved under the national budget.

“Through this commitment, an amount of GH¢58 million has been paid to support Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” the Finance Minister told lawmakers.

He explained that the disclosure formed part of government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in detailing public spending.

“In the spirit of transparency and accountability, allow me to lay before this House a clear account of some of the expenditure we have made so far in support of government programmes and sectors approved in the 2026 Budget,” Dr Forson stated.

The Black Stars, led by experienced Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, delivered a commendable performance at the tournament, reaching the knockout stage before bowing out in the newly introduced Round of 32.

Ghana finished 24th among the 48 participating nations at the World Cup, marking a successful return to football’s biggest stage after missing the previous edition.

The focus now shifts to the Black Stars’ next challenge — the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Ghana has been placed in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, The Gambia and Somalia, with the team set to begin preparations for a campaign aimed at securing qualification for the continental tournament.
