Speculation had circulated suggesting that the experienced coach had stepped down from his position following South Africa’s impressive showing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, SAFA has moved quickly to clarify the situation, describing the reports surrounding Broos’ departure as “completely false.”
In an official statement, the association confirmed that Broos remains the head coach of Bafana Bafana and continues to oversee the team’s preparations for upcoming international assignments.
The rumours emerged after Broos guided South Africa to a historic World Cup campaign, leading the team to the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time in the country’s history.
Bafana Bafana secured their place in the second round after recording a crucial 1-0 victory over South Korea in their final Group Stage fixture in Monterrey, Mexico. The achievement marked a significant breakthrough for South African football, as the team had never previously advanced beyond the opening phase of a FIFA World Cup.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, Broos returned to South Africa with the squad before travelling back to Belgium, where he is currently spending time with his family. SAFA confirmed that the 74-year-old coach is expected to return later this month as preparations resume for future national team commitments.
This is not the first time Broos has been linked with a possible departure after achieving success with Bafana Bafana. Similar reports surfaced in 2024 following South Africa’s impressive run at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where the team secured a bronze medal.
At the time, speculation suggested that Broos was being considered for the Tunisia national team job, but those reports were dismissed and the Belgian continued his work with South Africa.
Since his appointment in 2021, Broos has played a key role in rebuilding Bafana Bafana, turning the team into one of Africa’s most competitive national sides. Under his leadership, South Africa reached the AFCON semi-finals and achieved their historic World Cup progression.
SAFA’s latest clarification is expected to end the uncertainty surrounding Broos’ future, with the veteran coach set to continue guiding Bafana Bafana as they look to build on their recent successes on the international stage.
