The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has warned that any Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive (MMDCE) found to have authorised the construction of buildings on waterways will be dismissed and face severe sanctions.
She said she was prepared to take decisive action against local government officials who issue permits for developments in unauthorised areas, particularly waterways and flood-prone zones that have contributed to recurring flooding in the region.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, July 10, during the first day of the National General Clean-up exercise, the Minister said she was ready to make an example of any official found culpable.
“I’m more than ready. In fact, I just want one person as a scapegoat. That is what I’m looking for. Just one person as a scapegoat,” she stated.
Her comments follow concerns over the increasing number of structures built on waterways and other restricted areas, following President John Dramani Mahama’s directive that MMDCEs who approve such developments should be sanctioned.
Ms. Ocloo said some individuals whose structures have been marked for demolition have claimed they obtained permits from local authorities, adding that investigations would be conducted to identify officials responsible for approving such constructions.
“If we have that permit and find out that there’s this particular MCE who is responsible, why not? That person will be fired,” she warned.
The Regional Minister also disclosed that demolition exercises had commenced in parts of the Greater Accra Region as part of efforts to remove illegal structures and restore the capacity of waterways.
She added that several structures had already been identified for removal, with affected occupants expected to vacate the areas within the required timelines.
