Many Ghanaians were heartbroken after our 1–0 defeat to Colombia. As usual, some blamed the players, others blamed the government, and many pointed fingers at the Ghana Football Association. This cycle repeats itself whenever we fail to meet expectations at the FIFA World Cup or the Africa Cup of Nations.

The truth is that we must address the problem from the grassroots rather than focusing only on the results at the highest level. Success in football does not happen overnight. It requires long-term planning, investment, and commitment.

Out of the 54 African countries, many either fail to qualify for major international tournaments or are eliminated at the group stage. If we continue to neglect grassroots football, we should not be surprised by disappointing performances on the world stage. As the saying goes, we often blame where we fall instead of where we slipped.

One of Africa's biggest challenges is our overwhelming support for European football at the expense of our local leagues. Millions of Africans, especially Ghanaians, passionately support clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Real Madrid. However, when it comes to our own clubs such as Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak, Sekondi Hasaacas, RTC, Wa All Stars, and Karela FC, many people pay little attention to them. Some even know very little about their activities.

We celebrate and help foreign clubs grow through our support, viewership, and even by sending our best players to play for them. Yet, when international competitions arrive, we expect to defeat the very nations whose football systems we have helped strengthen. Football development begins at home.

We must ask ourselves some difficult questions. How many government-sponsored football academies exist in Ghana? Has enough been invested in developing young football talents across the country?

If Ghana truly wants to become a football powerhouse, the government should establish at least one well-equipped football academy in every district. These academies should combine quality education with professional football training and other sporting disciplines. This will ensure that talented children develop both academically and athletically from an early age.

The players developed through these academies, schools, and local clubs will form a strong talent pipeline for Ghana's national teams. As they progress through district, regional, and national competitions, the best players can be selected to represent Ghana at various age levels before graduating to the senior national team. This will ensure that the Black Stars and other national teams are consistently supplied with talented, disciplined, experienced, and well-prepared players who have grown through a sustainable football development system.

At the same time, Ghanaians must support our local clubs with the same passion we show for European teams. Strong local leagues produce stronger national teams. Investment, fan support, and proper youth development are the foundation of lasting football success.

When we build football from childhood through adulthood, we will develop players with confidence, experience, discipline, and the technical ability to compete with the best teams in the world. Instead of searching for people to blame after every tournament, we will be celebrating the rewards of careful planning and sustained investment.

The future of Ghanaian football depends not on short-term reactions but on long-term vision.

If we invest in our grassroots today, we will harvest success tomorrow.
