2026 World Cup: Benjamin Asare keeps feet on ground after heroics earn Ghana crucial point against England

Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has played down his match-winning performance after inspiring the Black Stars to a hard-earned goalless draw against England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 33-year-old produced a series of outstanding saves at Boston Stadium on Tuesday night to frustrate England's star-studded attack and secure a valuable point for Ghana in their Group L encounter.

Asare emerged as the standout performer of the contest, repeatedly denying England as they searched for a breakthrough.

Facing a frontline spearheaded by captain Harry Kane, the experienced shot-stopper remained composed throughout, preserving Ghana's clean sheet with a commanding display.

His heroics ensured Carlos Queiroz's side extended their impressive start to the tournament and strengthened their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages.

Despite earning widespread acclaim and man-of-the-match recognition, Asare remained modest about his contribution.

“It’s normal. For me, this is my job. It’s just what I’m supposed to do out there on the pitch,” Asare told FIFA.com.

The Hearts of Oak goalkeeper also brushed aside suggestions that facing one of the world's most feared strikers made the occasion any more special.

“Sure, playing against Harry Kane is all part of the job. It’s nothing out of the ordinary.”

Asare's calm demeanour mirrored Ghana's disciplined performance, with the Black Stars frustrating England for long periods while matching the European giants in intensity and organisation.

The goalkeeper further acknowledged the unpredictable nature of football, insisting that even the game's elite players experience both highs and lows.

“Even the best goalkeepers let goals in, and strikers are there to score. I’m no different. They might score against me, but they might not. All part of the job.”

The result leaves both Ghana and England level on four points at the top of Group L heading into their final group-stage matches on Saturday.

England will take on Panama, while Ghana face Croatia as both sides aim to strengthen their positions ahead of the knockout rounds.
