Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has described the legacy of former President Jerry John Rawlings as one that goes beyond politics and continues to shape Ghana’s democratic and governance systems.
According to her, the late former President’s commitment to integrity, accountability and public service remains relevant to the country's efforts to strengthen institutions and promote good governance.
Her remarks come at a time when the National Democratic Congress and supporters of the late statesman continue activities marking what would have been his 79th birthday and reflecting on his contribution to Ghana’s democratic development.
In a social media post on Wednesday, June 24, following a memorial lecture held in honour of the late former President, the Vice President said the event offered an opportunity to assess Rawlings’s impact on the country.
“President Rawlings’s legacy extends beyond political leadership. His insistence on transparency in public life and his call for ethical leadership remain indispensable to building strong institutions, promoting good governance, and advancing sustainable development,” she wrote.
The lecture, held on the theme, “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy,” featured a keynote address by legal practitioner Tsatsu Tsikata and focused on the contributions of the late former President to Ghana’s democratic journey.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang said the discussions highlighted values that defined much of Rawlings’s public service, including integrity, probity, accountability, patriotism and dedication to the welfare of Ghanaians.
She noted that the Fourth Republic, which has become one of Africa’s stable democracies, forms part of the enduring legacy of the former President.
“Safeguarding our democracy requires vigilance and commitment. The Fourth Republic, which has become a beacon of democratic stability in Africa, is part of the legacy of President Rawlings and all those who contributed to our democratic evolution,” she stated.
The Vice President commended the organisers of the memorial lecture for creating a platform to celebrate the former President’s contributions while encouraging current and future leaders to uphold high standards of public service.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang urged Ghanaians to continue drawing inspiration from the positive aspects of Rawlings’s legacy in efforts to build a stronger and more accountable nation.
