World Cup 2026: Switzerland edge past Canada in Group B decider

Switzerland prevailed 2-1 over Canada on Wednesday in Vancouver to claim top spot in Group B and secure their knockout progression in this World Cup 2026. Nati made a dominant start to the second half, with Vargas striking with a low drive that bounced off the left post.

Canada's Jesse Marsch made tactical adjustments, introducing fresh attacking options including Stephen Eustaquio and Liam Millar, but Switzerland's defence held firm for much of the second half. The match became increasingly tense and physical. 

Promise David's superb finish in the 76th minute provided a glimmer of hope for the Canadians, reducing the deficit to a single goal. In the last minutes of the game, Tanitoluwa Oluwaseyi came close to equalising with a late header that went narrowly wide. However, Switzerland's experience and defensive discipline proved decisive, with goalkeeper Gregor Kobel making important saves throughout. The victory sees Switzerland finish atop Group B with six points and secure their progression to the Round of 32, while Canada, despite the defeat, also advance with four points.
