Is Jonas Adjetey The New John Mensah?

Is Jonas Adjetey The New John Mensah?

Ghana centre-back Jonas Adjetey was the rock at the heart of the Black Stars' defence in a pulsating goalless draw against England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Wolfsburg player's confidence has soared after he endured a stinker against Austria in a pre-World Cup friendly match. He gave away a penalty in the 10th minute after handling the ball inside the penalty area.

However, he has seamlessly steadied the shaky backline with his towering presence in the ongoing tournament. He had a marvellous game against Panama. In the opening match, he clipped the wings of the attackers by forming an impenetrable partnership with Jerome Opoku.

He further stifled England's attack by frustrating the likes of Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Jude Bellingham, and Noni Madueke with his clean tackles. He barely put a foot wrong throughout the game.

As a player making his World Cup debut, many would have thought he would be overwhelmed, but he has proven to be a mainstay in the team.

His presence has effectively dealt with any deficiencies that the absence of Alexander Djiku and Mohammed Salisu might have created.

Both Salisu and Djiku will need to go the extra mile to regain their positions after recovering from injury, considering what Adjetey and his partner, Jerome Opoku, have shown the world.

He had to dig deep into his reserves to keep Ghana in the game on several occasions. Adjetey, who is cast in the mould of former Black Stars captain John Mensah, has marshalled the defence with finesse, just as his predecessor would have done.

His aerial ability and calm composure in the face of adversity are reminiscent of the former skipper.

Harry Kane found a tough customer in the defender. Adjetey was constantly on his heels, limiting the striker's influence and making life difficult for him throughout the game.

With his sterling performances in the tournament, do not be surprised to see elite clubs chasing Adjetey's signature. Any club that secures his services will have struck gold, given the quality he has displayed.

After his masterclass performances against Panama and England, he appears destined for greater things. He just needs to remain focused and not allow his current success to get into his head because he is still a work in progress.

Go, Adjetey—the world is yours to conquer!
