Black Stars goalkeepers' trainer Daniel Gasper has expressed optimism over the recovery of first-choice goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi ahead of Ghana's crucial Group L encounter against England.

Ati-Zigi, who started Ghana's opening match against Panama at BMO Field on Wednesday, was substituted at half-time, with Hearts of Oak shot-stopper Benjamin Asare replacing him as the Black Stars secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory.

Providing an update on the St. Gallen goalkeeper's condition, Gasper revealed that the technical team is pleased with the player's steady progress and will continue to monitor his recovery closely before making a final decision on his availability.

Speaking to Ghana FA's official website, Gasper said the medical team, in consultation with head coach Carlos Queiroz, remains positive about Ati-Zigi's chances of returning soon.

“We’re extremely happy with his progress. It’s day by day. Obviously, this is a medical issue collaborated with head coach Carlos Queiroz, so we’ll take it session by session,” Gasper said.

“We’re optimistic, and the decision will be made at the right time. But one thing is for sure — we always stress the team above the individual. Any decision we make is in the best interest of the team," he added.

The encouraging news for Ghana is that Ati-Zigi has already returned to group training at Rhode Island as preparations intensify for Tuesday's showdown against England on June 23.

The Black Stars will be hoping to have their first-choice goalkeeper fully fit as they seek to build on their winning start and strengthen their position in Group L.
