President of the Ghana National Paralympic Committee (NPC) and the African Paralympic Committee (APC), Samson Deen, has rewarded Ghana’s para athletes who have qualified for the 2026 Commonwealth Games with GH¢10,000 each as part of efforts to motivate them ahead of the competition in Glasgow.
The financial package was announced during the official unveiling of Team Ghana’s para athletes for the Games. The gesture is intended to recognize the athletes’ dedication and achievements in securing qualification for the prestigious multi-sport event, while also boosting their preparations for the competition.
Mr. Deen reaffirmed his commitment to the development of para sports in Ghana and assured the athletes of continued support as they prepare to represent the nation on the international stage.
In addition to the GH¢10,000 reward, he disclosed that each athlete would receive an extra GH¢5,000 before the team departs for Glasgow.
The athletes who have secured qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games include Raphael Botsyo Nkegbe, who will compete in the Men’s T54 Wheelchair Racing event, Hayford Addai in Men’s T47 Para Athletics, Haruna Tahiru in the Men’s 100kg+ Para Powerlifting category, and Promise Wonder Atsu Aheto in Para Swimming.
Speaking on behalf of the athletes, Nkegbe, a three-time Paralympian, expressed gratitude to the National Paralympic Committee and the Ghana Olympic Committee for their unwavering support.
He also called on corporate Ghana to partner with and support Team Ghana as the athletes intensify preparations for Glasgow 2026.
Meanwhile, para powerlifter Haruna Tahiru has set his sights high for the Games, assuring fans, friends and family that he is determined to return home with a medal.
Ghana’s para athletes will be hoping to make a strong impact when the 2026 Commonwealth Games take place in Glasgow, carrying the hopes of the nation as they compete against some of the best athletes from across the Commonwealth.
