Host nation Ghana ended the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships without a gold medal after finishing 18th on the final medals table following the conclusion of the competition on Sunday, May 17, in Accra.
Team Ghana wrapped up the five-day championship with five medals — one silver and four bronze — despite hopes of delivering a strong performance in front of the home crowd.
The final day featured more than 12 events across track and field disciplines, including the high jump, javelin, and several finals, bringing an end to days of intense competition in the Ghanaian capital.
Ghana’s hopes of ending the tournament with a gold medal were dashed after team captain Joseph Paul Amoah finished fifth in the men’s 200m final.
The women’s 4x400m relay team narrowly missed a podium place after finishing fourth, while the men’s 4x400m team placed last with a time of 3:05.14.
Ghana’s medal tally included bronze medals in both the men’s and women’s 4x100m relay events. Alex Amankwah also won bronze in the men’s 800m, while Florence Agyemang secured bronze in the women’s 400m race.
The country’s only silver medal came through high jumper Esther Obenewaa.
South Africa finished top of the championship standings with 20 medals, ahead of Kenya in second place with 17 medals, while Ethiopia placed third with 14 medals.
