The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic death of Berekum Chelsea player Dominic Frimpong after an armed robbery attack on the club’s team bus.
The incident occurred on Sunday night as Berekum Chelsea returned from their Ghana Premier League Matchday 29 fixture against FC Samartex at DUN’s Park, where they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat.
According to reports, the team was ambushed by armed robbers along the Bibiani–Goaso road. The attack quickly turned chaotic as gunmen opened fire, forcing players and technical staff to flee into nearby bushes in a desperate bid to escape.
Frimpong, a member of the playing body, sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was later pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
In an official statement, the GFA said it had received the news with “profound shock and deep sorrow,” describing the incident as a devastating loss not only to Berekum Chelsea but to Ghana football as a whole.
The Association extended its condolences to Frimpong’s family, teammates, and the entire club, highlighting the young player’s promise and dedication to the game.
“This tragic incident is not only a huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole. Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league,” the statement read.
The GFA also confirmed it is in constant communication with the club and relevant authorities, including the Ghana Police Service, as investigations continue.
It further called for swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice and indicated plans to engage key stakeholders to review and strengthen security measures for clubs travelling for domestic competitions.
The Association urged the football community to rally behind Berekum Chelsea and the bereaved family during this difficult period.
Frimpong’s death has sent shockwaves through the Ghanaian football fraternity, casting a sombre mood over the domestic game.
