Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has called on the Black Stars to treat all their 2026 World Cup opponents with vigilance, highlighting Panama as a potential challenge despite their underdog status.
Ghana, placed in Group L with Panama, England, and Croatia, will compete in the summer tournament co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
In an interview with Graphic Sports, Kingston warned against underestimating any team.
“We know our opponents very well, apart from Panama. I think we are very much aware of England. A lot of people are writing off Panama, but for me, that’s the most important opponent.
Kingston added, “We see England and Croatia over and over again, playing every week. But the Panama team are players that we are unaware of. They will be a thorn in our flesh. I know most people see them as the underdogs, but I think they will be the most difficult match.”
His comments underline the importance of thorough preparation, ensuring the Black Stars give equal focus to both established football powerhouses and less familiar teams capable of causing upsets.
Ghana will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27. Preparations include a March training camp with friendlies against Austria and Germany, followed by a final warm-up against Mexico in May. During the tournament, the team will be based at Bryant University in the United States.
After exiting at the group stage in 2014 and 2022, Ghana will aim for a more competitive showing in North America.
