Ghana football icon Charles Taylor has launched a scathing critique of local coaches, labelling them as “lazy” and ineffective in developing young talent.
Ghana has long been recognised as one of Africa’s top exporters of footballers to Europe, second only to Nigeria.
Yet, despite this reputation, fewer than 30 Ghanaian players currently compete in the top five European leagues—a statistic Taylor says reflects shortcomings in coaching.
In an interview with Sporty FM, the former Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko midfielder argued that Ghanaian coaches fail to nurture and refine players, leaving young talent ill-prepared for international competition.
“Ghana has talented players, but coaches are lazy. They are not polishing players," Taylor said.
Taylor, who enjoyed a 16-year career spanning clubs including Great Olympics, Etoile du Sahel, Enugu Rangers, and Berekum Chelsea, also earned 16 caps for the Black Stars, leaving a legacy that he hopes inspires better development pathways for future generations.
