2025 AFCON the most successful in history - CAF president Patrice Motsepe

CAF President Patrice Motsepe has described the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco as the most successful edition in the competition’s history.

Motsepe applauded the quality of football on display throughout the tournament, stressing that the high standard attracted admiration from some of the game’s most respected coaches and global football icons.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, he highlighted the widespread international attention the tournament generated.

“We always succeed when our football is beautiful. I point out that Mbappe came here to Morocco, Zidane also, Kounde and other players. We are very proud that they came and supported the best players in Africa," Motsepe said.

Beyond the performances on the pitch, the CAF president underscored the role of organisation and world-class infrastructure in elevating the tournament.

“The level of football was wonderful, as were the infrastructure, stadiums, and services. On behalf of 54 federations, we express our gratitude to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, to his government, and to the people of Morocco, as well as to the work done by our brother Fouzi Lekjaa.

Motsepe also praised the warmth and hospitality of the host nation, describing it as a defining feature of the tournament.

"This makes ordinary people say that the hospitality and warmth of the Moroccan people are beautiful, and my Moroccan friends tell me this is part of their culture, something truly special," he added.

The 2025 AFCON concludes later today, with hosts Morocco facing Senegal in the final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. Kick-off is scheduled for 19:00 GMT.
