The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, has announced an ambitious plan to repair and upgrade the iconic Baba-Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

The announcement followed a working visit to the facility, accompanied by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene.

During the visit, the delegation, alongside technical experts, conducted a thorough inspection to assess the stadium’s current condition and identify critical challenges hampering its operations.

Kwame Baah Mensah, the Regional Director of the National Sports Authority (NSA), outlined the key issues affecting the stadium. These included unsafe zones within the facility, non-functional floodlights, deteriorated washroom facilities, damaged reserve benches, excessive electricity costs, broken irrigation pumps for the pitch, and outdated public address systems.

He also raised concerns about security vulnerabilities in areas designated to protect players and officials. The playing turf, long overdue for refurbishment, was also noted as a major concern.

Hon. Adams emphasized that the directive from President John Dramani Mahama is unequivocal: to restore Baba-Yara Stadium to its former status as a source of national pride and joy.

“This stadium has a storied history and holds a special place in the hearts of Ghanaians. We are committed to ensuring it meets international standards once again,” he stated.

“All efforts will be made to bring this facility back to life and maximise its potential for the benefit of our nation.”

Built in 1957 by the United African Company and officially opened as a football pitch in 1959, the Baba-Yara Sports Stadium has witnessed numerous historic moments, including hosting a memorable World Cup qualifier between Ghana and Nigeria. It has long been a fortress for the national team, which often performs best when playing on home turf in Kumasi.

Over the years, the stadium has undergone several renovations, with the most recent major upgrade starting in 2020. Phase one, completed and handed over in November 2022, saw improvements to the tartan tracks, pitch, floodlights, and irrigation systems. Yet, prolonged neglect since then has seen the stadium fall into disrepair, leading to its recent classification by CAF as unfit for international fixtures.

Hon. Adams expressed confidence in the stadium’s future, highlighting its potential not only as a sporting venue but also as an economic catalyst.

“This facility can generate substantial revenue and catalyse local economic development. It’s about time we fix this gem and uphold its legacy,” he affirmed.

With these renovation plans set in motion, fans and stakeholders alike eagerly anticipate the day Baba-Yara Sports Stadium reclaims its position as a symbol of pride, unity, and sporting excellence for Ghana.
