The Commonwealth Games Association Ghana (CGA) has officially confirmed that Team Ghana will participate in the 2026 Commonwealth Games, set to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, CGA President Richard Akpokovie outlined the association's preparations for the Games and expressed confidence in the country's readiness for the competition.

Mr. Akpokovie reflected on Ghana's achievements at previous Commonwealth Games editions held in Jamaica, Canada and Scotland, stressing that Team Ghana is determined to build on those successes. He disclosed that approximately 40 athletes are expected to represent the country in nine sporting disciplines.

According to him, Ghana's contingent will compete in events including Athletics, Boxing, Judo, Swimming and Para Sports. He explained that the reduced number of athletes and officials is due to the exclusion of some sporting disciplines from the Glasgow Games programme.

The CGA President assured stakeholders that extensive preparations are underway to ensure Team Ghana is fully equipped to compete at the highest level and make the nation proud on the international stage.

As part of the preparations, indigenous company THB has been unveiled as the official kit supplier for Team Ghana. The company will provide competition and ceremonial attire, as well as bags, towels, slippers and water bottles for the athletes and officials.

The event, held at the Central Hotel in Ridge, attracted several prominent figures from Ghana's sporting fraternity. Among those in attendance were Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, who represented the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kobby Woyome, Samson Deen, former world boxing champion Azumah Nelson, and former heptathlete Margaret Simpson. Several accomplished para-athletes and members of the CGA board were also present.

President of the Ghana Boxing Federation, Dauda Fuseni, expressed optimism about the prospects of Ghana's boxing team, the Black Bombers, who are currently in training camp ahead of the Games.

"I can assure you that we will improve upon Birmingham 2022 and come with gold," he said.

Team Ghana's Chef de Mission, Ernest Danso, also expressed satisfaction with the progress of preparations, noting that athletes in camp have responded positively to training programmes.

He further revealed that there has been significant interest from media personnel and volunteers seeking accreditation for the Games, adding that the selection process would ensure the best candidates are chosen.

Meanwhile, the CGA has introduced a new motivational slogan aimed at inspiring Team Ghana athletes as they prepare to compete in Glasgow. The association believes the initiative will help boost morale and reinforce the team's ambition of achieving success at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
