Ghanaian boxing prodigy Joseph Commey, 21, is set to make an extraordinary entrance into the professional ranks by competing for a championship title in his debut fight.
On November 24, Commey will step into the ring at Accra's Bukom Boxing Arena to challenge fellow Ghanaian Richman Ashelley (11-4, 10 KOs) for the vacant UBO Africa Lightweight title. The event will be broadcast globally on DAZN.
Commey, nicknamed “The Jaguar,” follows the path of boxing icons like Vasyl Lomachenko, who won the WBO International title in his first professional fight in 2013, and Andy Cruz, who claimed the IBF International belt on his debut last year. Only exceptional talents step into a title fight from day one, and Commey has already shown he’s one of them.
His amateur career showcases his potential: in 2022, he claimed silver at the Commonwealth Games in the UK, forced to withdraw from the final due to illness. This year, he won gold at the All-Africa Games and made it to the third round of the world Olympic qualifiers in Bangkok. Commey also advanced to the third round of the Africa Olympic qualifiers in Senegal, although many believe his fighting style is better suited to the professional arena.
In August, Commey got his first taste of the pro scene, winning a semi-professional bout (IBA-pro) in Ethiopia. Now, he’s fully prepared to face Ashelley, known for his powerful punches.
“Ghana For Peace Fight Night,” promoted by Box Office Sports with BROWNED WORLDWIDE, will feature three other UBO title fights. Prince Patel will face Maxwell Awuku for the UBO World Welterweight title, Tony Bange will take on Eliasu Sulley for the UBO World Super Middleweight title, and UBO Africa Welterweight champion Sampson Segbedzi will defend his title against Isaac Commey.
